Spring 2008: Equity News reports: "APPEAL
RAISES THE ROOF": The Syracuse Stage production of Fiddler on
the Roof raised $12,831 in audience appeals, sending $4,270 each
to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DePalmer House — a supportive
housing program — and SUNY Upstate Pediatric AIDS Center. ...
Equity member Mary Ellen Ashley, who played "Yente"
led the appeals each night, often joking with the audience about the
show and the characters they'd just met. "It helped them relax
with what I was going to ask them to do," she said, "but this
is also very personal to me. I lost my best friend to AIDS long ago
and one of my dearest friends, Fred Vogel, was one of the founding members
of BC/EFA. So I'm happy to contribute in any way I can and am especially
proud of what our cast of Fiddler here in Syracuse did."
